Paulo Futre - the last Gladiator! When you think about Portuguese football icons, two names always come to mind: Eusebio and Ronaldo. But there is another name that deserves to be up there, and it's Paulo Futre. Futre was born in the small town of Almada, on the south bank of the Tagus River, in 1965. He started his career at Sporting Lisbon, where he played for three years before being transferred to Atlético Madrid for a world-record fee of £6 million. He soon became one of the most feared strikers in Europe, with his mazy runs and youtube-worthy goals. In 1990, he won the European Golden Boot after scoring an impressive 31 goals in just 36 appearances. But it was at Porto where Futre really made a name for himself. He led the club to two consecutive league titles and one European Cup, becoming a hero amongst the fans.
